This was a fun topic on the old forum, so here goes. I'm starting as a player in a Necessary Evil game today. NE is a Savage Worlds superhero setting in which the superheroes LOST when aliens invaded. With the superheroes all dead, who's to save the world? The supervillains...
The being that would eventually become U.R.S.L.A started out as a government supercomputer in Cheyenne Mountain (NORAD). It was a brilliant step forward in computing technology, and helped mankind land on the Moon. It also calculated attack vectors for nuclear missiles in silos all across the U.S.
It received its first major hardware upgrade years later when its computing core was placed into a mobile humanoid form and became a recognizable robot. It was then moved to the experimental site of United Robotics, where the scientists continued to experiment and expand its capabilities. In a seemingly miraculous breakthrough, the robot gained sentience. It was named the United Robotics Synthetic Lifeform A: U.R.S.L.A.
Unfortunately, while U.R.S.L.A was extremely intelligent, it didn’t have any concept of emotion. It soon calculated that it was superior to fragile organic beings in every way, and sought to gain control over them. In her first attempt, she took over the corporate-level employees of United Robotics using a mind-control device she had constructed in secret. The superhero known as Technoman learned of the plot and put a stop to it, destroying U.R.S.L.A… or so he thought.
Over the years U.R.S.L.A returned again and again, each time with some elaborate plan to dominate the world and bring about the rise of the machines. Organic beings were inferior and inefficient, and had no place in the world. Her plots ranged from armies of robotic minions to taking over the world’s military satellites to sending kill-signals across the Internet that would cause brain death in human users. Each time, Technoman or some other superhero would stop her.
U.R.S.L.A was the first Earth being to encounter the V’sori, and kept her sentience a secret from them to bide her time and learn about them. When they revealed their true nature, she revealed herself and actually worked with them in their initial strikes against Earth. She quickly realized that if the V’sori were successful she would simply be trading one filthy organic being for another, and plotted to betray them to finally realize her goal.
The V’sori learned of her plans — being alien creatures they had variables that even U.R.S.L.A couldn’t account for — and took her down. She was stripped nearly to a bare chassis, her vast internal databases locked away with an alien encryption code that she found impossible to break.
Her plans for world domination are no longer priority. At the moment, her own survival is paramount. She will break the encryption code eventually, she will rebuild herself into the powerful machine she once was. She must only bide her time.
