I feel like the more games I play, the less precious I am about my characters. At this point with Extrabeth, she left the Vault and was immediately permanently brain-damaged by the psychic maelstrom, so it's like, "Ok, here we go, let's see how this turns out, lol."
Jason has gamed with me enough to know that if you throw me something weird, like a random character to play or a de-ghouling ability, I will grab it, hoist it high, and run around in circles cackling delightedly. YAS, AAAAAAND! But everyone has different play styles and a wacky curveball may not work for everyone. Ditto what's been said about knowing your group and what they're comfortable with. If in doubt, ask! It doesn't have to ruin the surprise, asking in a general way can help gauge if your players are into a particular scenario or not. If they are, you've built some anticipation and excitement, so that when it happens they can jump right in. 🙂
