I see where you are coming from, because it's an art book. As far as typography design goes, years ago I was a big fan of a magazine called adbusters sort of a strange anti-advertising anti-consumerism magazine it made you think outside of the box and look at the bullshit magazines are selling you constantly. I have a very broad interpretation of art, and I do not have to like something to concede its artistry. So clearly the creators of the book are artists.
However I would not try to run a game with such a bizarre counter intuitive unreadable design. I am even the type of person that is okay if a rule book does not have an index, but good luck looking up anything in this monstrosity. I have many times said that Apocalypse World while being one of my favorite game systems has the worst books, but Mork Borg takes the cake.
You are correct that it is doing something right because people are fawning over it and it won awards, because I too am not an OSR fan and would have ignored it otherwise, so clearly I am alone the crowd saying the emperor has no clothes.
I just don't understand what it is doing, I read it...well read what I could, the "world" is no different to me than other OSR games DCC or LotFP being the most prominent and while I don't like those games either they are readable and present a game system that can be played.
I debated whether or not to post at all, perhaps I shouldn't have because there is no need to be a bullshit artist and just spread my bullshit everywhere. If you like OSR or even this game and you have fun then that's fantastic.
I would even play in such a game, because I have a simple rules when it comes to rpgs. Any game can be fun regardless of system, but I am only going to read and learn games that I find interesting and would run.
